Special mail accounts

...............

Info

An often present mail account is 'info@yourdomain', as a rule used as the central e-mail address for organisations. The use of this account is no longer obligatory.

If you wish, incoming mail addressed to this central e-mail address can be automatically forwarded to one or more persons responsible for handling the central mail.
Catchall

With the mail account 'catchall@yourdomain' you can catch all mail directed to your domain for which no user address exists (such as mail to mis-spelled addresses). All such mail ends up automatically in this mailbox.

Until recently, is was common use to add the 'catchall' as an alias of the info account. With the ever increasing amounts of spam to non-existing user addresses, it is recommended to create the 'catchall' as an independent mail account, to prevent the central mail of becoming a mess. When spam attacks take place or large amounts of spam continue to come in, you better inactivate or delete the catchall account.
Obligatory addresses

We recommend you to create a mail account 'obligatoryaddresses@yourdomain' and add the aliasses 'postmaster', 'hostmaster' and 'abuse' to this account.

The existence of the mail addresses postmaster, hostmaster and abuse at your domain is 'netiquette' and can prevent, among other things, that some providers do not accept mail from you domain.

For background information, see: http://www.rfc-ignorant.org/rfcs/rfc2142.php.
Unit accounts

A handy tool within organisations are 'unit accounts': a common e-mail address for a certain unit, the board, etc. The 'forward' option provides you the possibility to automatically distribute the mail to all persons belonging to that unit.

Unit accounts are a proper solution for distributing mail to small numbers of addresses. For sending mail to large numbers of addresses, e.g. your external newsletter, Mailing Lists are a far better alternative. Mailing lists offer better protection against spam and other unsolicited mail, and have great maintenance facilities.
